Grace Lutheran Church

Racine, Wisconsin

Like many older churches with its main floor a half story above grade, access was challenging for the elderly and disabled. Architects created a new entrance at the back of the church, close to handicapped parking, with a four-stop elevator providing access to grade and all three stories.

The new construction was executed in an architectural style which replicated original portions of the historical church.
A covered drop-off was added to provide weather protected access.
Before - Existing window and door openings were ideally positioned for the elevator door openings.
The elevator shaft (shown in red) was wrapped with a new lobby and stair access.
